TBH a few years ago when Singles Day started popping up here in Australia, I did have to head to ChatGPT to find out what it was about. And while Singles Day might still feel new in Australia, it’s massive globally.
It started in China back in the 90s as an anti-Valentine’s Day joke amongst students – a bit of a wink (one could argue middle finger!) at the couple-heavy vibes of Valentine’s Day, and from that, a playful excuse for self-care.
The date, 11 November or 11.11, was chosen because the number 1 represents a single person. Put a few of them together and you get a line of singles standing side by side. Over time that simple idea turned into the world’s biggest online shopping event. What began as an in-joke celebration of being single grew into something much bigger – a moment to treat yourself and celebrate individuality.
